I HAD EXPECTED THE WORST

THIS IS JUST A GENERIC FOOTBALL PHOTO

YEARS AGO, I WAS
supposed to cover a a high-school football game in the boondocks of North Carolina. They had cell service, but not the kind I used.

I told the sports editor that I might be late, and he said to do my best.

The home team won, and I talked to the two head coaches. The principal was nearby, so I asked if he had a place where I could write and send my story. He set me up in the assistant principal's office.

I'd already written some of my story, so I added quotes, and the writing was easy. After much editing, I sent my story and used the office's phone to call the paper. Phil was surprised but pleased; I explained that none of my worries came true. Everything worked out perfectly.

I told him he could call my cell in a half hour if needed. I had to be around Danbury to get cell service. I don't think he needed to call me.

It turned out to be one of the easiest nights I ever had covering high-school football. And I had expected the worst.

Quick bio

TOM GILLISPIE'S QUICK BIO

I was a newspaperman for 30  years, mostly as a writer and copy editor. I was an auto-racing writer from 1987 to 1999 for newspapers, and I covered all of the usual sports plus off-the-beaten-path sports like bodybuilding, rugby, long-distance running and cycling.

I started freelancing in 1990 with Winston Cup Scene and have since written for most of the top auto-racing magazines. I've done freelance work for The Miami Herald (basketball), The Baltimore Sun (football) and The Washington Post (auto racing), among other newspapers, and my magazine credits include Sports Illustrated (a short basketball feature) and The Sporting News' preseason auto-racing edition.

I've written three books and co-written another, and have had four comic-book scripts published. All of the books and comic books are about auto racing.

Since 2000, I have written for the Winston-Salem (N.C.) Journal on subjects ranging from sports to history to wine to fitness or dancing to fishing and hunting (and more). Plus World War II and Afghanistan.

• On my list of local credits: The Business Journal of the Greater Triad, The Associated Press, Winston-Salem Monthly magazine, WS Works magazine, and Sparks magazine.

I've also edited or proofread several dozen books, both fiction and non-fiction.

Interestswriting and editing, politics, sports, football, baseball, auto racing, dogs, astronomy, mysteries, sci-fi books and movies, classic books and movies, country/western and rock 'n' roll music, Beethoven, Scrabble, U.S. history and more
