Watching Netflix DVDs

For the last few months, I've been getting DVDs from Netflix and watching movies and TV shows.

I've watched new movies like the most recent Star Trek and Star Wars movies, and old movies like John Wayne westerns and Teahouse of the August Moon.

Today, I watched the 1997 Super Bowl featuring Green Bay and New England (the Packers won 35-21). I've seen old highlights before, but this is the first time I'd watched a specific game.

I already knew who won, but I didn't remember some of the things that had happened in the game. So I enjoyed it. I also liked the fact that they showed mostly action, with a little between-play commentary sprinkled in there.

John Madden and the late Pat Summerall handled the commentary. As Madden would say: BOOM!

Note: I won't get any more of the individual games, only the folly disks and other collections. Most of the games are from the '90s on, and the rest are from the '80s. I'd like to see games from the '70s on back.

If I'm going to watch the Packers on DVD, I'd like to see Bart Starr, Don Hutson and some of the other greats from the past. I remember Brett Favre quite well.

Note: I've found better old games on YouTube for free (or having to watch commercials). And, yes, I watched two Super Bowls with Bart Starr.

Note: If you're outside the U.S., you might check out this website about Netflix.

New episodes for my TV shows

MOST DAYS, I'LL LOOK at Netflix and check to see if my favorite TV shows have been updated with more episodes. It's happened with Criminal Minds, Murdoch Mysteries and Longmire, and it recently happened with NCIS. In each case, it was like getting a gift in my inbox.

I had almost given up on NCIS, but I'm happily watching shows that I missed live (most of them). I don't know why, but I deal better with streamed shows on Netflix and HuluPlus than I do on over-the-air TV or cable.

I'm still waiting for Longmire's new season (Sept. 23). Last year, I watched the entire season (about 10 episodes) in two days. I may do it again.

Holly and I recently added Acorn TV to our list of streaming carriers, to go with Netflix, Hulu and Sling TV. All of those add up to much less than cable TV; I think we pay less $45 a month for all of those.

Sling ($20 a month) is the most expensive, by far, but it'll soon be worth it; football.

NOTE: In mid-September, Netflix just added another season of Hawaii Five-0, and I've been watching it. I'm being a little slower at moving through the season.

NOTE 2: I'm most of the way through the season of Longmire; I'm savoring it.

NOTE 3: All of the above info is obsolete in 2022, although I still catch NCIS now and then. We've added Paramount +, and I've been watching Strange New Worlds.
