A DIFFERENT brand of SCOTCH (a story from the 1970s)

In the winter of 1976-77
,
I was running the wine cellar at a major hotel, and we were working a cocktail party in the conference center. I was just helping out because we were short-staffed.

A wine waiter came back and said there was a problem. A guest ordered J&B Scotch, but he said he got Ballantine's, our house brand. So we sent him another J&B.

The waiter soon came back and said the same guest complained that we sent Ballantine's again. The bartender wasn't sure what to do, so I suggested we send Ballantine's this time.

The wine waiter soon came back with a big smile; the guest drank the Ballantine's and enjoyed it.

I've always wondered if that guest was simply trying to drink more scotch by saying he was getting the wrong scotch. Or he was trying to show off to his friends. We'll never know.
