WHAT IS STARFLEET?

I just finished episode seven of the third season of Strange New Worlds, What Is Starfleet? There were parts I didn't like, particularly some of the documentary-style questioning. Eventually, though, I loved it.

I knew before the end that the Jikaru would die, although I didn't think of it flying into the sun. I was emotional at its death, and, for me, it became the best episode of the season, easy.

We got to see Pike's strong command style and his compassion, plus the crew's faith in the mission, even though they didn't know everything until late in the episode. In the end, we saw the crew's camaraderie, and we saw Erica Ortegas's brother Beto grow a bit.

The Jikaru reminded me a bit of Tin Man on The Next Generation, and I thought of the flying jellyfish in TNG's Encounter at Farpoint. Those creatures, though, didn't have to die. That made this more powerful and painful.

The documentary style reminded me a bit of a M*A*S*H episode from the 1970s.

I hate to give episode seven a nine out of 10, but I will, for now.

EXTRA: I was just watching a ScifiNatics video about the episode, and the speaker hated the episode. He didn't like the questions (I didn't either), and he didn't like the drones' camera shots (I didn't care).

THE SEHLAT WHO ATE ITS TAIL

This was my favorite episode of season three of Strange New Worlds; but it wasn't perfect.

The thing that bothered me the most was that James T. Kirk was unable to make decisions. I can't imagine this Kirk would grow up to be the William Shatner Kirk; I can't even imagine him on the command track.

In this episode, I felt most comfortable when Pike, not Kirk, was onscreen. And I enjoyed Pike and La'an working together.

When they started talking about a planet killer, I thought: Oh, NO! The Doomsday Machine. Fortunately, they didn't go that route.

I kinda enjoyed the old phones, but I couldn't believe that they wouldn't recognize a communication device.

The monstrous machine didn't LOOK like V'ger (Voyager) from The Motion Picture, but it made me THINK of V'ger. It was a destructive mechanical construct that kept adding to its size, complexity and power; like V'ger.

I was saddened to think that humans had become scavengers, but it was nice to see Kirk's pain at having killed 7,000 humans. And the Kirk-Spock relationship is developing nicely.

I want to give this episode an eight because I DID like it. I think, though, that I'll give it a seven, tying it with episode one of the season; it was good, not great.
