GILLISPIE AND LADY |
The name Gillispie originated from the Gaelic-Scottish words Mac giolla Easpuig, meaning 'The son of the bishop's servant.'
It morphed to MacGillespie, and it immediately became Gillespie in the United States. But it didn't stay that way long.
My grandmother accidentally changed our family's name to Gillispie when she put an extra "i" on someone's birth certificate more than a century ago. And there are dozens of variations of Gillespie (and Gillispie).
Here's a list I found online:
Galespy, Gilespie, Gilespi, Gillespi, Gillespe, Gillesbie, Gillepsie, Guilespi, Galespi, Gillepsie, Gillissie, Gillespy, Gullespie, Gilesspee, Gilespie, Gilaspie, Galspe, Galespee, Gileespie and Gilespe.
Gillispie isn't included, and neither is Gilleslee (Mike Gilleslee played for the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots of the NFL).
In fact, that web site also left out Glaspy, Glispy and Glasby. And I've often been called Gillipsie. But you can't catch everything.
