WEATHER and DEMPSEY

WE WOKE UP TO a winter wonderland this morning. We had about six inches of snow, not the 10 or more that had been predicted. My wife drove down University Parkway in Winston-Salem, N.C., and it took us about 40 minutes to go 10 miles.

I'VE ALWAYS BEEN a big fan of Tom Dempsey, who kicked a then-record 63-yard field goal for the New Orleans Saints in 1970. The NY Times ran a story on Dempsey today, and, yes, he'll be rooting for the Saints next week. Dempsey only played two years in New Orleans, but he and his wife returned there after his career ended, and they're still there.

YOU MIGHT CHECK OUT the Sports Illustrated story on the greatest college-football recruiting classes of all time. I don't know I'd totally agree with all of them, but it would make for a nice argument.
