A MEMORY OF GEORGE

In 1989, I went to my 10-year reunion at Radford University in Virginia. George Carlin was headlining at the Dedmon Center on campus, so I attended.

The first guy up played guitar and was funny, and I thought, "How can George Carlin beat this?" Easy.

Carlin came out and blew us away for more than an hour. The highlight for me came when I started laughing so hard that I was on my back, gasping for air.

I was on the bleachers beside the stage, to his right. He stopped talking, turned and leaned over, looking to see if I was OK. After a few seconds that seemed like 20 minutes, I sat up and waved to him. He waved back and went back to his routine.

The crowd didn't react; I guess they thought I was part of the act.
