1493 AND 1813

1972 DOLPHINS
When I was in high school in the late '60s, our teacher was getting us to think broadly in comparisons.

What do you think of when you hear 1493? 1492, of course, the year Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

What about 1813? I said I thought of the War of 1812, and a classmate said that wasn't even the same year. I later learned that the War of 1812 lasted from June 18, 1812 until Feb. 17, 1815. So 1813 was appropriate. Our teacher agreed.

The year 1962 makes me think of Kennedy's assassination, even though he died in 1963. In fact, I think of JFK's assassination every Nov. 22.

Others: 1860, the Civil War, even though it started a year later; 1940, World War II, even though we didn't enter it until December 1941.

Every time I see the number 512, I think of Ernie Banks' home-run total; 521, the home-run totals of Ted Williams, Frank Thomas and Willie McCovey; 536, Mickey Mantle's home-run total, and 714, Babe Ruth's home-run total.

When I see the number 12,312, I think of Jim Brown's rushing total. And 17-0 makes me think of the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins. In fact, 1972 makes me think of the unbeaten 'Phins.

It's just the way I think.
