A BUNCH of TURKEYS


More than 40 years ago, I was driving
through the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, and I pulled over to watch something interesting.

Several hunters were near a stand of trees, and five or six wild turkeys were hiding behind a couple of those trees. The hunters would go left, and the turkeys would sneak to the right. Then they'd reverse themselves.

Finally, the puzzled hunters muddled around while the turkeys kept the trees in front of them and CAREFULLY BACKED AWAY FROM THE HUNTERS! By the time the hunters moved into the trees, the birds had flown the coop.

People have often told me that wild turkeys are stupid, but I didn't see it. They seemed a lot smarter than the hunters.

I also wondered why the men were hunting so close to U.S. Highway 220. Dangerous...
