The first minor-league game I ever covered was the Charleston (SC) Rainbows (a San Diego Padres affiliate), and then Charleston got the RiverDogs, an affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.
When we moved to North Carolina, I covered the Winston-Salem Warthogs, and the Warthogs were replaced by the Winston-Salem Dash (both White Sox affiliates).
I don't remember their opponents that well, but I do remember the Kannapolis (NC) Intimidators, named after the late Dale Earnhardt's nickname. That team is now the Cannon Ballers, I learned recently.
I won't try to list ALL of the minor-league teams here, but I'll add a few with interesting names or notable backgrounds. On the TV show M*A*S*H, Max Klinger often talked about the Toledo Mud Hens and wore a Mud Hens baseball cap. You'll find them below.
More later.
