Open sesame; a quick football story from 2008

In 2008, I was supposed
to cover a high-school state-championship football game in Raleigh, N.C. The game was being played at N.C. State's football field, Carter-Finley Stadium.

They had saved credentials for me, but they'd left them at the Will Call window. So I had to talk my way into the parking lot.

There were several people working together when I got there. I talked to them, particularly one woman, for several minutes, and they were nice. But they wouldn't let me in. I couldn't prove to them that I wasn't just trying to get into the game free.

I had made up a credential that I wore at high-school games; it said MEDIA, Surry Messenger, Tom Gillispie. But, as the woman pointed out, anyone could have printed up credentials like that.

She said I needed to prove that I was a newspaper man. In desperation, I pointed out that I had a North Carolina Press Association sticker on my front windshield and a Winston-Salem Journal sticker on the back window (I had worked for the Journal before I took the Messenger job.).

Before I could even finish my sentence, she looked at my windshield and waved me forward. "Let him in," she told the others.

Open sesame...

The PRESS cap (and my friend Mike)

THE PRESS CAP

When I heard this past weekend
that my friend Mike had just died, I thought of many things. But two stories came quickly to mind.

One of them involved a black baseball cap with the word PRESS on it in silver letters. I was a member of the working press (newspaper division), and someone had found that cap somewhere and brought it to me.

We were in a newspaper office, and that cap made sense. But Mike, who was much shorter and smaller than me, ran around giggling, then diving forward and "pressing" that cap with his fingers. He was pretending that the word PRESS was giving him carte blanche to press that spot.

I was furious (it DID hurt a bit). He took great delight in pressing the cap, and I never saw any humor in it. But we got over it and remained friends.

And I got rid of the hat.

Another time, someone was doing a monologue in the newsroom when I walked by. I made the mistake of saying something, and that person lit into me. There were two problems here; one, I was busy, and, two, I really didn't care one way or the other about this deep subject.

Mike, standing nearby, immediately saw my problem. He stepped forward, grabbed this person by the elbow and asked a journalism question. I was quickly forgotten as these two journalists got into a deep (but, thankfully, short) discussion over some obscure point of newspaper style.

I got away clean.

I've always thought of that second story fondly and the first with aggravation. Now, I wish I still had the PRESS cap (it was one of the softest hats I've ever had) ... and Mike could press it.

(NOTE: I found that cap in a box in 2024. My wife had salvaged it, but by then it was ruined.)
