I was just thinking about my favorite Twilight Zone episode, Time Enough At Last. Burgess Meredith is a bookish guy who spends his lunch hour in the bank vault, reading.
The atomic bomb goes off, obliterating the town, but he survives. He realizes he has all the time in the world to read, but there's a catch: With a bunch of books in his arms, he breaks his glasses.
Now he can't read at all. He's desolate.
The problem with the story is that Meredith probably wouldn't have had more than two weeks to read anyway. The food would have been irradiated from the blast, and he'd die from starvation and radiation poisoning.
Still, it was a great story; it just had holes.
(Also, there would have been more devastation from the blast than that shown in the episode.)
