They were wrong.
The first year of the current calendar was NOT 0. It was 1. The 10th year was 10; the 100th year was 100, and the thousandth year was 1000 (I'm not trying to be a smart aleck; I'm just making a point. The first year of the second millennium was 1001, and the last year of the second millennium was 2000.
Thus, the first year of the first decade of this century was 2001 (Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick knew what they were doing with 2001: A Space Odyssey, the book and movie, respectively); the last year of the decade was 2010. This decade started with 2011, and it will end with 2020.
In the late 20th century, I figured this out, then, for some reason, forgot it. I sat down and figured it out a second time. It's stuck with me since then.
